Schools in BATH may like to consider including in their WW1 project the history of the Royal United Hospital, which was the site selected in April of 1916 for the Bath War Hospital. Did you know?...

Following the outbreak of war in 1914, wounded and traumatised soldiers returned to Britain for treatment. The War Office asked the Mayor of Bath to provide a hospital for 500 injured soldiers and the site of Combe Park farm was selected. In April 1916, demand for beds at the Bath War Hospital rapidly outstripped supply and large tents were erected to accommodate up to 1400 patients. The Royal United Hospital (RUH) now occupies the former site of the Bath War Hospital and delivers acute health care to a catchment population of 500,000 people across Bath & North East Somerset, North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire. Traces of the original Bath War Hospital have now disappeared; there are few people in the local community aware of the significant role played by the Bath War Hospital in the care and rehabilitation of soldiers during WW1.

Art at the Heart supports the RUH Bath with an award winning art and design programme that stimulates healing and well-being, and creates an uplifting environment for patients, visitors and staff. In January 2016 we embarked on a project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bath War Hospital. As part of this project we have established the Bath War Hospital website to record the story of the Bath War Hospital, and we hope that this will provide a valuable resource for anyone who wishes to learn more about the City of Bath during WW1, or about day to day life in a WW1 hospital. The site holds images, stories and information collected from various sources, and will be updated as we continue to collect new stories and memorabilia.

Thanks to Heritage Lottery  ‘1st World War, Then and Now’ fund for enabling us to commemorate the history and heritage of the Bath War Hospital and thank you to everyone involved in this project, please see our Bath War Hospital film on our website for more information.
