A WW1 poem from Glenda ...Glenda Jackson never misses her Goldies session in Uttoxeter in Staffordshire. She sent us this poem which we are delighted to put on our website:
Remembrance day what is it all about.
There is really no need to sing and and shout.
Just have the time to sit and think.
All those year's go by in a blink.
Memories and photos of all the war's.
Bullet holes, mud, cuts and sores.
Horse's pulling guns through the sticky thick mud.
How to stop all this l wish that we could.
Men and women running through dirty trenches.
Feet in stinking water sitting on benches.
Guns all pointing over the top.
There goes another one what a good shot.
Bang goes the cannons, bang goes the guns.
Bang bang goes another son after son.
Row after row of shiny white marble.
Those brave young soul's they are a marvel.
Then remembrance day soon comes around.
They are grannies and grandads now and very few to be found.
All we can do is think about it all and buy a poppy.
It would be best to end all wars and stop it.
I love men and women young and old.
What sad stories they have yet to be told.
Our award-winning schools inter-generational programme from 'Goldies' (as it is fondly known) was first launched in 2010.
It encourages schools to open their doors to older people in their local communities and grandparents of their pupils.
This is a new project supported by The National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Moondance Foundation, The Royal British Legion and The Santander Foundation to help primary schools to recognise and commemorate the final two years of WW1 from early in 2017 until November 11th 2018 when the nation will look back on that time in 1918 and remember ... This website will help schools to find project ideas, offer an easy to download medley of WW1 songs and encourage all schools to make contact with the Golden-Oldies Charity in England and Wales so that older people can participate in school project days, special WW1 events and promote communication between the young and the young at heart.
This project is led by the founder of the Golden-oldies Charity, Grenville Jones
